Plas Newydd in Denbighshire, Wales is an 18th Century cottage with an fascinating story and a reputation for ghostly sightings and paranormal activity. Haunted Happenings have exclusive access to this property for the night to go in search of the many reported ghosts and spirits that lurk within its Gothic interior.
The story of the Ladies of Llangollen is known worldwide. Lady Elanor Butler and Miss Sarah Ponsonby were born into two wealthy families but not prepared to conform to the rules of society and the fate or a Regency lady. They left their home in Ireland and set up home together in this 18th Century cottage, which they then set about transforming into a Gothic masterpiece with elaborate oak carvings and stained glass windows. The ladies received many important visitors during their 50 years at Plas Newydd including Sir Walter Scott , William Wordsworth and even the Duke of Wellington. Elanor died in 1829 and Sarah followed just 2 years later, many say from a broken heart.
Over the years there have been so many reported ghostly sightings and experiences within the house and grounds and many believe that both Sarah and Elanor still haunt their beloved property. People have reported seeing figures moving through rooms, extreme drops in temperature, loud thumps from empty rooms and even the cry of ladies voices. On a recent visit, we were surprised to encounter a malevolent energy that affected one person so badly that they had to leave the property and we also heard several bangs on request from the upper floor while nobody was up there. There have been reports of the spirit of an old woman felt in the upstairs rooms, a young boy in the drawing room and even an unwelcoming military man in certain areas.
